Favourite authors: Lynn Austin
Dec. 19th, 2011 10:59 pmLynn Austin is a contemporary Christian author of 12 novels. She started writing during the long winter days when she lived with her family in Canada. Five of her novels have won Christy Awards for excellence in Christian fiction and the novel Hidden Places has been adapted into a movie for Hallmark Channel. I've read all of Lynn's novels and am always looking forward to a new one appearing!

I believe Lynn Austin is one of the best Christian authors at the moment. I read quite a lot of Christian fiction and some authors can annoy me with their repetitive or simplistic storylines (though I'm sure there are many non-Christian authors who are annoying, I'm stating it this way, because I'm not as widely read in contemporary 'normal' fiction). Reading one of Lynn's novels is always like reading a truly new story. Every one of her books is unique. It helps, ofcourse, that her novels are set in different eras; from the ancient world of the Old Testament, via the Civil War and WWII to the present day. For all of these settings, Lynn Austin has managed to capture the atmosphere of time and place very well. Reading one of her historical novels really feels like entering another time, a feature I find very important in historical fiction.

Does this mean there is no common divider in Lynn's novels? No, I believe there is. All her novels feature a young woman as a main character, sometimes only a girl at the outset of the novel. These characters are very easy to relate to, as they grow and mature troughout the novel. They are women like you and me, whose circumstances in life force them to make difficult choices and learn to trust in God and themselves.
My personal favourite novel by Lynn Austin is Fire by Night. This novel, taking place during the Civil War, tells the story of two Northern women, socialite Julia Hoffman and farmer's daughter Phoebe Bigelow and how their lives are turned upside-down due to the war. I really love these characters and there are two truly touching love stories in this novel!
