birdienl: (Winter)

It's becoming a bit of a tradition (you can call something a tradition when you're doing it for the fourth time right?) to post a fandom picspam/masterlist of everything I watched and read at the end of the year (or the beginning of the next...) In the lists I've linked to reviews and posts I wrote about various movies, books and tv-shows. If you're interested in anything which I haven't reviewed, don't hesitate to ask!
Everything I enjoyed in 2013! )

Even though [livejournal.com profile] picspammy is no longer in operation, I decided to make an end-of-the-year picspam, like I did last year and the year before that!

My entry for Challenge 26 over at [livejournal.com profile] picspammy themed Setting: Scenery and Production Design. Because it's always summer in Lark Rise and Candleford and the beauties of these places should be showcased!

But those old ways lived forever in the human heart. )

Island at War takes place on the fictional Channel Island of St. Gregory and follows the lives of three families who try to adapt to the occupation in various ways. James Dorr, senator of the island, works hard to make the occupation as painless as possible for the islanders, while his wife Felicity worries about their son Philip. Cassie Mahy looses her husband in the German attack on the island and therefore logically enters the war with a deep hatred against every German. She tries to keep her grocery store running while watching her young daughters Angelique and June struggling with how to behave towards the many young German soldiers. Wilf Jonas is a policeman who is forced to work for the Germans. His wife Kathleen works hard at their farm and tries to keep her son and mother-in-law safe.

Spoilers for the first three episodes

A few weeks ago I watched this engaging BBC miniseries from 2004 about the German occupation of the Channel Islands. I found out that it was not very well known and I thought it deserved some LJ attention. The occupation of the Channel Islands, the only part of Brittain to be occupied by the Germans, is a relatively unknown chapter of WWII and the series had some great performances from well-known British actors like Philip Glenister, Claire Holman and Laurence Fox. As we've come to expect from the BBC, a lot of attention was payed to period details.

How does one approach one's jailor? Does one offer cups of tea? )

Actually one day late, but here it is, the last day of the movie meme! I had to choose my favourite movie. That's a mean question, don't you agree? Who can really pick his one favourite movie? So I cheated big time and simply choose all the movies I have given 5 stars in my movie list (I've kept a list of all movies I watched since I was about 14). Can you guess what my favourite genre(s) are?
