Are you, like me, also such big fans of housework? Just kidding, I don't think there are many people who really enjoy dusting, doing dishes and vacuuming! Therefore, I'm really grateful in the 21th centuries we have a lot of appliances making housework easier for us.

Before the invention of vacuum cleaners, you simply had to take your carpet outside and beat all the dust out of it to clean it. In the 19th century carpet sweepers were introduced, which has brushes rolling when you push the sweeper. As the brushes roll they sweep dirt and dust into a container. When suction was added to a carpet sweeper, in fact, the vacuum cleaner had been invented. This sort of machines first became available by the 1860s. The only downside was the suction came from a bellow which had to be cranked manually. Later 19th century inventors made push-powered machines with suction, which were already easier to operate, as you didn't have to crank the bellows ánd push the machine around. An interesting invention on the route to the modern vacuum cleaner was the horse-powered cleaning system from John Thurman in St. Louis. In 1898 he advertised with this system coming door to door!

The first motorized vacuum cleaners were petrol powered and also so large they had to stand in the street while hoses were passed through the windows of the buildings being cleaned. This kind of machine was used to clean the carpets in Westminster Abbey before the coronation of Edward VII in 1901.

The first practical, portable vacuum cleaner with an electric fan was invented by James Spangler from Ohio in 1907, but he had to sell the patent to William Henry Hoover. Hoover became very wealthy from the invention and in Britain, the name Hoover even became a verb (to hoover your carpet).
