25. Most annoying character ever

Well, I already wrote in a previous post about the book Eline Vere by the Dutch author Louis Couperus, I think she might be the most annoying character! I don't really like (putting it mildly) characters who whine themselves to death while they really don't have anything to whine about (not being poor or friendless etc.)

26. Most quotable novel or 5 of your favourite quotes from any books

Really I more often quote from movies (Shrek!) than from books. But Jane Austen is extremely quotable ofcourse!

27. Any five books from your 'to be read' stack. What makes you select a book for your 'to be read' stack?

- The tase of sorrow - Jude Morgan
- Swansea summer - Catrin Collier
- Little men / Jo's boys - Louisa May Alcott
- While we're far apart - Lynn Austin
- Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien

Most books that end up on my 'to be read' stack I've bought or were given to me (like the first three in the list above). Ofcourse I also put new books from beloved authors (such as Lynn Austin) on my list and last but not least books I've already read and enjoyed and I really want to reread (I've started with LotR, finished The Fellowship this winter, but still have to reread the other two parts)

28. Some firsts:

First book you remember loving/being obsessed with. There comes the h-word again, but really I think about 90% of books I read between my 9th and 12th year were about horses! Favourite series which might be familiar to my Dutch LJ-friends were Romana en Ragebol and Bianca series.

First book that made you cry. I once read a book in which everyone in the world had turned into cats and dogs except two young children. It frightened me and I rand down the stairs to see if my parents were still there and were still human.... I think I was about 7 or 8.

First book you gave to someone else as a gift. Next to the horse book series, other popular children books were Floortje or Cindy, and I remember buying these as a gift for friends.

29. Saddest character death OR best/most satisfying character death (or both!)

In the appendix to Lord of the Rings is the extended story of Arwen and Aragorn. It's beautiful, but also very sad. Because as we all know, Aragorn does die and Arwen does not. The description of how she wanders aimlessly around Middle Earth after his death brought me to tears.

30. The End: do you prefer everything tied up or to be able to 'make up your own mind'? What is the worst ending to a book you have read? And the best? (careful, spoiler tags!)

I do like most things tied up. A completely open ending makes me uneasy, but it's also good there remains something to still think about.
Maybe not the worst ending, but definitely the saddest (and so unexpected!) was of Atonement by Ian McEwan. I really felt cheated afterwards. I love the ending of Mansfield Park: 'let other pens dwell on guilt and misery'. Go Jane, straight to the happily-ever-after!
