This casting picspam was made for the cast/recast picspam challenge at Costume Awards

You may know the brilliant book The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. In that case you also know this is not a 'classic' or even a contemporary historical novel. Then why, may you ask, are you making a cast picspam of this book for a Costume community? Well, The Eyre Affair may not (yet...) be a classic, it is all about the classics in this novel. More specifically about Jane Eyre, as you might have guessed from the title. I'll stop chatting now and give you a small introduction to the book and then, on to my casting choices!

Book summary: The Eyre Affair takes place in an alternative '80's, in which the Crimean War is still ongoing, people keep re-engineered dodos as pets and the public is obsessively in love with literature. Meet Thursday Next, a 30-something single, living in London and working as a literary detective at SpecOps-27 (special operations). Thursday gets in trouble at work when she's involved in a shoot-out after the original Martin Chuzzlewit manuscript goes missing. She is replaced to her birthplace Swindon, which might sound calm and out-of-the-way, but adventure seems to follow Thursday here as well. When the original Jane Eyre manuscript is stolen and strange things happen to the narrative, Thursday might have to go beyond the boundaries of our world to save the beloved novel.

The level-headed heroine will be played by Hattie Morahan (Sense and Sensibility '08)

Landen is the man from Thursday's past. Now a writer and still living in Swindon, he will bump into Thursday again when she moves back there. Will he also be the man for her future? Landen will be played by Eliot Cowan (Lost in Austen)

One of Britain's most sought criminals and allegedly unable to be killed, Acheron Hades
is Thursday's enemy in the novel. He will be played by Mark Strong (Emma '96, The Young Victoria)

Bowden is Thursday's partner at her new workplace in Swindon. Used to a quiet and ordered job, Bowden might be in for a change when he teams up with Thursday. He will be played by Anthony Howell (Wives and Daughters, Foyle's War)

Thursday's father was a member of the ChronoGuard, a special policeforce who keeps track of everything related to time. Unfortunately, he stumbled upon corruption in the higher regions of the force and was eradicated from time. Luckily, he can still visit his family members, although his visits are not always in the right chronological order... He will be played by Anthony Andrews (The Scarlett Pimpernel, David Copperfield, The King's Speech)

Thursday's mother lives in Swindon with Mycroft and Polly and some pet dodos. Like Mrs. Bennet, she would like nothing more then for her daughter to get married and she does not hestitate to try and make matches. She will be played by Celia Imrie (Cranford, Daniel Deronda)

Thursday's uncle Mycroft is an brilliant inventor. Unfortunately, he invents mostly useless things. This changes when he invents the Prose Portal (which transports people into the Bookworld) and finds himself right in the middle of Thursday's adventures. He will be played by Jim Broadbent (The Young Visitors, Harry Potter)

Thursday's aunt Polly is the slightly less chaotic wife of Mycroft. As her husband's volunteer, she is the first person to go through the Prose Portal. But will she able to get back to the real world? She will be played by Barbara Flynn (Cranford, Miss Potter)

Jack Schitt, employee of the super-cooperation Goliath, is very interested in marketing the Prose Portal. But just how far is he willing to go to get it and might he be in league with Acheron Hades? Jack Schitt will be played by Allan Cumming (Emma '96, The Good Wife)

Thursday mysteriously met Rochester as a child. When everything in his book starts to go wrong,
Rochester is only too glad too receive Thursday's help. He will be played by John Light (North and South, Dresden)

Jane Eyre is about to visit the real world for the first time, but does she go willingly? And will she find her way back to her beloved Rochester? Jane will be played by Imogen Poots (Miss Austen regrets)

This was real fun to do! I wanted to do more of these picspams for the challenge, but unfortunately time flies and the closing date is today. Well, I might still do it anyway! If you've got any ideas for books which should be made into movies or movies which could be recast, let me know!

I quite like most of my choices, but I'm not too sure about Rochester and Jane. What I would really like, if The Eyre Affair was ever made into a movie, was for Rochester and Jane to be played by actors who had already played them in versions of Jane Eyre. But for this picspam I thought that would be cheating, so I did my best to pick some interesting actors.

*puts The Eyre Afair on her Amazon Wish list*

I might actually be able to afford. I need a good book since I'm sick in bed. :(
The Hattie casting won me over. I was like "Well this heroine can't be dumb if Hattie is perfect for her."

Thanks! Mark Strong and Hattie Morahan are my favourite 'casting' choices personally!

How cool you got to talk to Jasper Fforde! I've been reading a bit around the internet about what people think about a Thursday Next adaptation, quite a lot of people have written about it on their blogs. And I must say, it's tricky. Some things which work perfectly in the novels might not work so well on screen, all the word jokes etc.

I haven't read the last book either, but it's definitely on my TBR list for this year. Might be a few months though, I'm also writing an article on Jasper Fforde for the webzine Femnista, do you know that magazine? So I might suffer from Fforde overload after that article is finished!

What audio do you mean exactly? If you mean the audiobooks, that would be wonderful!

It's certainly an interesting book (bookseries really, because there are six Thursday next books and probably two more will come out) for every bookloving person!

Thanks for the compliment on my images *blushes*

Now, Thursday Next is all but dumb! And neither are the books, they are filled with wordplay and in-jokes only bookloving people can understand!

If you're a bookloving person, and especially the classics, you will love The Eyre Affair and the rest of the Thursday Next novels. They are full of wordplay and in-jokes only bookloving people will understand.

This is the link to the Femnista website: http://www.charitysplace.com/webzine.htm

I think the new one will be out around the end of January. If you could send me the link to your article, that would be nice!

Sneaky indeed! I wouldn't mind if you send me that, I would like to hear his views on an adaptation.

I always imagined Hades to be a very thin, wiry villain with a pointy beard. I love Mark Strong and for some reason, in my head, he would make a very good Jack Schitt.

I enjoyed this though. OMG if there's an actual Eyre Affair movie!!!! That would be AMAZING.

Happy New Year btw :)

I believe Hades is described as a tall, quite handsome man, but can't he also shapechange? Anyway, I was totally convinced of Mark Strong playing an evil character after his role in The Young Victoria.

Jack Schitt is apparently not handsome and without an ounce of charm. While that is not exactly true of Allan Cumming, he is not conventionally handsome, I believe.

An adaptation would be awesome, but the more I think about it and discuss it with others, the more I think it would be really hard to get the best part of the book (the bibliowit) to the screen. What do you think?

Happy New Year to you too!

Hello!

I'm fine as well! I had a nice holiday, which was actually too short afterwards... Well, work is nice as well, but I miss the 4-day workweek of my previous job sometimes!

Oh, the infamous TBR list, it just grows and grows with the years, doesn't it?

Mark Strong is ace at playing evil characters. He's such a good actor and sometimes I am sad he is always cast in the villain roles. But he certainly would be great as Hades here.

Alan Cumming can be quite charming, though I'm sure he can turn it off for Jack Schitt. I think Cumming's comedic ability is perfect for playing Jack Schitt, for sure.

You are right - the bibliowit is definitely something that can't be captured on screen. It would have to be a very different sort of movie, if it ever gets done. As for now though, I'm happy just reading and creating a movie in my imagination :)

good to hear it :)

yes, that's to the things with holidays :( have you now 5 working days or do you work on Saturdays, too?

yeah, it's a wicked list which seems to grow on its own all the time :D

No, I don't work on Saturday. Yet. I might have to in the future when I plan experiments with live animals. They don't stop needing care and looking after just because it's Saturday! I already see my colleagues who culture cells having to go to the lab in the weekend. It's all part of the job and then I'll just go home a little earlier some other day.

Poor old Mark Strong. One day he'll get to play a good guy!

You get triple bonus points for including Celia Imrie and Jim Broadbent.

I did think Hattie Morahan was great in Sense and Sensibility (although I still prefer the Emma Thompson version, shame!), but do you think she might be a bit young to play Thursday? Although, I suppose she is a lot younger in 'The Eyre Affair' - I guess the later ones have just stuck with me more, but there is about twenty years between them isn't there?

Mark Strong played 'dear old' Mr. Knightley once! Though he was not my favourite Knightley (not by far...)

Yes, I think there must be about 20 years between the first and last TN books, as Friday is a young adult in the last books.
