8 Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts (1)

         Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows
book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. sharing
exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things they've encountered during the week etc.)

For a while now I've been looking for a 'format' to talk a little bit more about real life stuff or just small observati ons and shout-outs that I'd like to make which don't fill a whole post. I think this weekly blogging event is just what I need for that! I hope to make posts like this more often (though perhaps not weekly...)

1. Tomorrow I'm going to visit a traditional country market. There are going to be demo's and workshops of old farming techniques, cooking and crafts, rare animal breeds and lots of stand with interesting traditional products. The weather promises to be good and it all takes place in an open-air museum. I'm really looking forward to it!

2. In two weeks, the kids club I lead at my church is going to start again and with it comes the task of thinking up interesting activities. Do any of you have good crafts or games ideas for girls ages 9-12, preferably doable in about 1 hour tops?

3. Last week I was a bit sad that summer was really over. Students came pouring in to the university where I work, the weekly workmeetings (which I secretly abhor) started again etc. But then this week we had some really good weather and I could smell the fresh smell of autumn in the air and some leaves getting coloured, so now I'm kind of looking forward to autumn as well! (Plus, my sword-fighting classes have started again, that's a big plus!)

4. With the autumn starting also comes the start of the new TV-season and all the promo's that I see around are making me look forward to the return of my favourite shows: Grey's Anatomy, Once Upon a Time and most of all Downton Abbey!

5. Ofcourse the new season of Doctor Who has already started, with a new Doctor as well! Though in general I'm a bit tired of Stephen Moffat's writing, I was quite happy with the first two episodes. The new Doctor promises to be very interesting and him and Clara work together very well, especially in the second ep.

6. I had a really good customer experience this week: I was going back to a department store with a pair of shoes that I bought in April which were already broken. Not even to get money back, but just to make a complaint that I think these (rather expensive) shoes shouldn't wear out so quickly. But I was received very courteously and got a voucher with the complete amount I paid for those shoes! Thumbs up!

7. I recently read a book (The Carpenter's Children by Maggie Bennett) which takes place during WWI. But have a look at the cover: does that model look anyting like she could live in 1914? The hair and top is all wrong!

8. It's already September and I start looking a bit at my progress at my reading challenges. I'm quite dissapointed with myself for having only read 2 classics so far this year when I challenged myself to read 10. I do really like reading classics, but they're often so long and reading them takes so much more time then reading 'modern' novels. And with so many books still on my TBR, well, I guess you know what I mean....

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for your club! My middle school group always had the worst games. *sigh*

I can't believe summer is over either! Like you, I am a bit torn between sad that summer is over and excitement for fall weather!

That is so, SO awesome that you take sword-fighint lessons! How fun! Is it more medieval-ish or more like actual fencing?

That book cover definitely does not say World War I to me either! Book covers can be so funny. So many times they are completely off base as to the actual subject of the book!

It´s medieval style swordfighting I do, we recreate the techniques from a German swordmaster called Tahlhofer. Maybe I should write a post about it?

He, thanks for the tip. I don´t think we´ve ever done one of these and it´s nice to do something outside before the dark evenings really set in!

That is a pretty book cover, but, um, no. Nothing to do with 1914--except that the flowers still bloomed away from the fighting. I always feel sorry for the poor authors who helplessly watch while publishers insist on cover art unsuitable to their works.

I never know what to do to entertain groups of youth. The scavenger hunt does sound like a good idea!

The strange thing is, the other books by this author have oké covers. Kind of typical paperback-historical-covers, but at least accurate for the era. And then there's this one...
