A walk into the sea
Apr. 22nd, 2010 04:41 pmThis weekend, I went with my sister and a friend for a walk in a rather unique piece of nature. I grew up and my mother still lives at the Wadden sea coast, an intertidal area inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the small town of Peasens (I think in English it could be pronounced something like Paisence), there is a pier extending into the sea for about a mile. I thought I'd share some of the pictures I took with you!
Google Maps picture of Peasens and the pier

The dry mudflats

That would be my sister and my friend (they were wearing wellies, I wasn't, so they could tramp around everywhere, while I had to stay on the concrete)

A boat and the island of Schiermonnikoog in the distance

Beautiful lichens on the stones of the pier

The landscape: the wooden poles were placed in the '50s/'60s to aquire new land from the sea, but the project was discontinued and now the impact of waves and currents slowly erode the tidal lands.

We came across a nest of young hares: very cute! I do wonder why the hare mother left her young here amid the shells. Their camouflage colours do not really help them here.

Other side of the dike/levee. The town of Peasens literaly borders this sea wall. Sheep graze it to keep the grass short.

Date: 2010-04-22 03:21 pm (UTC)I've been to Europe twice, both for missions trips. One to Germany, and the other to Poland with a stop in London.
If I ever get a chance, I'd love to visit Netherlands. The pictures are always so beautiful, and I'm sure it's even more beautiful in person. :D
The hares are SO cute, and the landscapes are gorgeous! :D
